Shopify web design in Auckland is for retailers who want a store that looks like their brand, loads fast and is set up properly for New Zealand customers. We design custom Shopify themes, customise existing ones, configure GST, shipping and payments, and migrate stores from other platforms without losing your search rankings. You get a fixed-price quote and a store you can run yourself.
Shopify is a strong platform, but a lot of NZ stores are held back by generic themes, too many apps and settings that were never adjusted for the local market. That is the gap a good Shopify developer fills.

Is Shopify the right platform for you?
We build on Shopify, WordPress and custom code, so we do not have a reason to push one over the others. Here is the honest picture.
Shopify suits you if selling products is the core of the website, you want hosting, security and checkout handled for you, and you would rather spend time on stock and marketing than on software updates. It is also strong if you sell in person, since online and in-store stock can live in one system.
Shopify may not suit you if the site is mostly content with a handful of products, you need very custom checkout logic, or you are sensitive to monthly app fees. In those cases WordPress website design with WooCommerce, or a custom build, may be better value.
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting and security | Included and managed by Shopify | Your responsibility or your developer's |
| Ease of running | Very easy admin | Flexible, more to manage |
| Ongoing costs | Monthly plan plus apps | Hosting, maintenance and plugins |
| Customisation | High within Shopify's rules | Almost unlimited |
| Content and blogging | Basic | Excellent |

The wider NZ e-commerce details, like courier rules and Google Shopping feeds, are covered on our ecommerce website design page.
Our Shopify build process
Store review and plan
Our free 20-minute website plan covers your catalogue, competitors and the searches your customers use. For existing stores, we also look at speed and apps.
Scope and fixed quote
We agree templates, sections, apps, integrations and migration work, then give you one fixed price.
Design
Mobile-first designs for home, collection, product, cart and key landing pages, built around how your customers shop.
Theme build and configuration
We build the theme, set up products, collections, shipping, tax, payments and integrations, and write SEO titles and descriptions.
Test, launch and train
Test orders on every payment method, redirects checked, analytics and Merchant Center connected. Then a walkthrough so you can run it yourself.
Most Shopify builds take five to twelve weeks depending on catalogue size and how much product content needs preparing.
Shopify SEO: what we fix by default
Shopify handles a lot of SEO basics, but it has quirks. Products can appear at several URLs through collections, collection filters can create thin duplicate pages, and many themes ship with heavy scripts. We set canonical links properly, write useful collection descriptions, add structured data for products and breadcrumbs, compress images and keep the app list short.
When the store is live, ongoing SEO and Google Ads with Shopping campaigns are the usual next steps for growth.
Shopify migration without losing rankings
Changing platforms is the riskiest moment for an online store's search traffic. Shopify forces its own URL patterns (for example products live under /products/ and categories under /collections/), so almost every old URL changes. We export every indexed URL from your old store, map each one to its new home and load the 301 redirects into Shopify before launch. Then we monitor Google Search Console for errors in the weeks after.
The full checklist we follow is in our website redesign SEO checklist.
Who we build Shopify stores for
Our Shopify work tends to fall into a few groups, each with different priorities:
- Retail shops adding online sales. The priority is keeping stock in step between the counter and the website, and offering click-and-collect so local customers can order ahead.
- Online-only brands outgrowing a starter theme. Usually the fix is better product pages, faster collections and a cleaner path from Instagram or Google ads to checkout.
- Service businesses with a retail range. Salons, gyms and clinics selling products alongside bookings, often linked from their main site. See our approach to salon and beauty websites.
- Wholesale and trade sellers. Separate trade pricing, minimum order quantities and account-only catalogues need careful setup but work well on Shopify.
Shopify costs: the build and the running
There are two sets of costs to plan for. The first is the build: custom Shopify stores with us typically start from about $8,000 +GST, larger catalogues and migrations can go beyond $15,000, and smaller theme customisation projects can cost less. Every project is quoted at a fixed price before work starts.
The second is the running cost, which you pay directly to Shopify and app providers rather than to us. That includes your Shopify plan, card processing fees on each sale and any paid apps. We keep the app list short and tell you upfront what each one costs, so the store does not quietly become expensive to own. Our website design pricing page shows how Shopify builds compare with our other packages.
Shopify red flags to avoid
- App overload. Each app can add monthly fees and scripts. Many stores pay for features the theme already has.
- Edits made directly to a live theme with no backup. We work on a duplicate theme and publish when tested.
- A developer who owns the store account. The Shopify account should be in your name. We work as a collaborator.
- No redirect plan for a migration. That can undo years of SEO overnight.
What to prepare
Have your product list (with variants, prices and SKUs), product photos, shipping costs by region, and policies ready. If you already have a store, we will need collaborator access to it and to your domain. Shopify design is one specialist part of our web design company in Auckland, so we can also handle your brand site, landing pages and marketing around it.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Shopify developer or can I use a theme?
A paid theme can work well for a small store with a simple catalogue. You need a Shopify developer when the theme does not fit how you sell: custom product options, bundles, trade pricing, unusual shipping, landing pages your marketing needs, or performance problems from too many apps. A developer can also customise a good theme rather than building from scratch, which keeps costs down.
Is Shopify good for New Zealand businesses?
Yes, for most retailers. Shopify handles hosting, security, checkout and updates, supports NZ dollars and GST settings, and connects to local courier and accounting tools through apps. The trade-offs are ongoing monthly fees, app costs and less control over some technical SEO details. For businesses that want to focus on selling rather than maintaining software, it is usually the best fit.
Can you move my store from WooCommerce or Wix to Shopify?
Yes. We migrate products, variants, images, customers and, where practical, order history. The most important step is SEO: Shopify uses its own URL structure, so we map every old product, category and page URL to its new address and set up 301 redirects. That protects the rankings and links your old store has built up. We test the redirects before and after launch.
How much does a custom Shopify website cost in NZ?
Shopify builds with us typically start from about $8,000 +GST for a custom-designed store, with larger catalogues, custom theme sections, migrations and integrations pushing beyond $15,000. Smaller theme customisation projects can cost less. On top of the build you pay Shopify's monthly plan, payment fees and any paid apps. You get a fixed-price quote before work begins.
Will I be able to manage my Shopify store myself?
That is the point of Shopify. You can add products, change prices, run sales, manage orders and edit most page content from the Shopify admin. We build theme sections so you can rearrange home page blocks and landing pages without code, and we give you a handover walkthrough covering the day-to-day tasks you will actually do.
