Website design cost in NZ ranges from about $20–$60 a month for a DIY builder, $1,000–$4,000 for a freelancer-built site, $3,500–$10,000 for a custom small-business website from an agency, and $8,000–$25,000+ for e-commerce or larger custom builds (all +GST). Where you land depends on the number of pages, how much is custom-designed, who writes the content, and whether SEO and conversion work are included or left for later.

That is the short answer. The rest of this guide breaks down what you actually get at each price point, what drives the cost up, the ongoing costs that rarely appear on the first quote, and how to spot a quote that looks cheap but will cost you more over three years. We also show our own ranges, because a pricing guide that hides its own prices is not much use.

Website design cost NZ: quick price table

These are typical ranges we see in New Zealand quotes in 2026. They are not fixed industry rates, and a specialist or very large build can sit well outside them.

What you get at each price point

DIY website builders

Wix, Squarespace and similar builders are drag-and-drop tools with a monthly subscription. You pick a template, add your text and photos, and connect a domain. They are fine for testing an idea or getting a basic online presence up this weekend.

The real cost is your time and the things you do not know to do. Most DIY sites we audit have missing page titles, one page trying to rank for everything, slow-loading images, and no clear next step for a visitor. You also rent the platform. If you leave, you usually cannot take the design with you.

Freelancers

A good freelancer can produce a solid site for $1,000 to $4,000, usually on WordPress or a builder using a premium theme. The best freelancers are excellent value. The risk is variability: some include basic SEO and mobile testing, others hand over a pretty homepage and disappear. Check who hosts the site, who owns the logins, and what happens if they get busy or move on.

Agencies building custom small-business sites

This is where most Auckland service businesses land. For $3,500 to $10,000 you should expect a planning stage, custom design rather than a resold template, mobile-first build, on-page SEO (titles, meta descriptions, headings, schema markup), page speed work, and a CMS you can update yourself. Our small business website design service sits in this band.

The difference you are paying for is strategy. A custom site is structured around what your customers search for and how they decide to call you, which is why a well-built $6,000 site can out-earn a $1,500 one many times over.

E-commerce websites

Online stores cost more because there is more to build and more that can go wrong: product setup, variants, shipping rules for NZ Post and couriers, GST-inclusive pricing, payment gateways such as Windcave or Stripe, buy-now-pay-later options like Afterpay, stock syncing and order emails. A small Shopify store with a modest catalogue might start around $5,000 to $8,000, while a larger catalogue with custom features and integrations moves well past $15,000. See our e-commerce website design page for what goes into a store build.

Large custom builds and web applications

Member portals, booking engines, quoting tools, CRM or inventory integrations, and multi-language sites are priced like software projects. Expect discovery workshops, a written specification and staged payments. These are worth it when the system replaces manual admin, but get a clear scope in writing before anything starts.

Rule of thumb: the cheapest website is the one that pays for itself fastest. A site that brings in two extra jobs a month is cheaper than a free site that brings in none.

What drives the cost of a website?

When two quotes for "a website" differ by $5,000, it is almost always because of these factors.

  • Number of pages and templates. A five-page brochure site is very different from 30 pages with separate service and suburb landing pages. Each unique layout adds design and build time.
  • Custom design versus template. Customising a theme is quicker. Designing from a blank wireframe around your brand and customers takes longer but gives you something competitors cannot copy for $79.
  • Content and copywriting. Writing is often the biggest hidden job. If the quote assumes you will supply all text and photos, that is cheaper on paper but often delays launch by weeks.
  • SEO depth. Basic SEO is titles and meta descriptions. Proper SEO setup includes keyword research, site structure, internal linking, schema, local landing pages and Google Business Profile integration.
  • Functionality. Booking systems, quote calculators, member areas, CRM integrations and e-commerce each add cost.
  • Migration. Redesigning an existing site means mapping old URLs and setting up 301 redirects so you keep your Google rankings. Our website redesign SEO checklist shows what that involves.
  • Platform. WordPress, Shopify, Webflow and hand-coded sites carry different build and running costs. We compare them in WordPress vs Shopify vs Webflow.

Our website design prices

We quote every project individually at a fixed price before any work starts, so you know the total upfront. As a guide, most custom small-business websites we build land between $3,500 and $8,000 +GST, and e-commerce and larger sites run from about $8,000 to $15,000+ +GST. Full details are on our website design pricing page.

Starter Website

From $3,500 +GST

For new or small service businesses that need a professional, fast site that turns visitors into calls.

  • Custom design, mobile-first
  • On-page SEO and schema built in
  • Click-to-call and enquiry forms

E-commerce and Larger Sites

From $8,000 +GST

For online stores and bigger sites with more pages, products or integrations.

  • Shopify, WooCommerce or custom
  • NZ payments, GST and shipping setup
  • SEO migration if you are replacing a site

Whichever tier you choose, you own your domain, design, content and code outright, and there are no lock-in contracts. A typical custom business site takes one to four weeks from kick-off to launch, and e-commerce or larger sites take five to twelve weeks, mostly depending on how quickly content and feedback come through.

Ongoing website costs to budget for

The build is a one-off cost. These are the running costs that keep a site online, secure and earning.

Domain name

A .co.nz or .nz domain usually costs somewhere in the region of $25 to $50 a year depending on the registrar. Make sure the domain is registered in your business's name, not your designer's. If you are still choosing, read .co.nz vs .nz vs .com.

Hosting and SSL

Cheap shared hosting can be a few dollars a month, but quality managed hosting with backups, security monitoring and an SSL certificate is more typically $20 to $80 a month. Shopify, Wix, Squarespace and Webflow bundle hosting into their plan fees. Server location affects speed for NZ visitors, which we cover in our guide to choosing website hosting in NZ.

Maintenance and updates

WordPress sites need regular core, theme and plugin updates, plus backups and uptime checks. Skipping this is how sites get hacked. You can do it yourself, pay hourly, or use a care plan like our website maintenance and hosting service.

Licences, apps and payment fees

Premium plugins, Shopify apps, booking software and email tools often carry monthly or annual fees. E-commerce stores also pay transaction fees to their payment provider on every sale. Add these up before choosing a platform, as app fees can quietly exceed the hosting cost.

Marketing: SEO and Google Ads

A website does not market itself. Ongoing SEO in Auckland builds organic visibility over months, while Google Ads buys immediate visibility for a click cost set by auction. Monthly budgets depend on your industry and competition, which is why we only quote them after looking at your market.

Hidden costs and red flags in website quotes

Most nasty surprises come from what a quote leaves out, not what it includes. Watch for these.

  • The designer owns the domain. If it is registered in their name, they control your email and website address.
  • Hostage hosting. The site can only run on their servers, so leaving means paying for a rebuild.
  • No code or design ownership. Some contracts licence the site to you rather than handing it over.
  • Long lock-in contracts. A low upfront price bundled with a 24 or 36-month monthly contract can cost far more in total.
  • "SEO included" with no detail. Ask exactly what is done: keyword research, titles, schema, redirects, local pages.
  • Content not included. If you must write every page yourself, factor in your time or a copywriter.
  • Change requests billed hourly with no cap. Fine for extras, but the agreed scope should be fixed.
  • No redirect plan on a redesign. This one can wipe out years of Google rankings overnight.

How to compare website quotes fairly

Put each quote into the same simple spreadsheet so you are comparing like with like.

  1. List the deliverables. Pages, templates, features, content writing, SEO tasks, training.
  2. Calculate three-year total cost. Upfront price plus 36 months of hosting, maintenance, licences and any contract fees.
  3. Check ownership. Domain, hosting account, design files, code and content should all be yours.
  4. Ask about results. Request examples of similar businesses they have helped get found on Google, not just nice-looking designs.
  5. Confirm the timeline and who does the work. Is it built locally, or passed to an offshore team you never speak to?

Tip: ask every provider the same question: "If I leave in a year, what do I walk away with?" The answers tell you more than the price.

Is a cheap website worth it?

Sometimes. If you are testing a business idea, a DIY site or a simple freelancer build is sensible. But if your business depends on people finding you on Google and picking up the phone, the cheapest option is often the most expensive over time. You pay twice: once for the cheap site, and again for the rebuild when it fails to bring in work.

A useful way to frame it is cost per enquiry. If a $6,000 site brings in ten extra quality enquiries a month and you win a few, it is likely to pay for itself within months. That is the thinking behind every project from our team, and it is why we start with a free 20-minute website plan that looks at your business, your area and your competition and gives you real numbers before you spend anything.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a basic website cost in NZ?

A basic brochure website in New Zealand usually costs somewhere between $1,000 and $4,000 +GST from a freelancer, or $3,500 to $8,000 +GST for a custom small-business site from an agency. A DIY builder like Wix or Squarespace costs less upfront, but you pay a monthly subscription and supply all the design, writing and SEO work yourself.

Do NZ web designers charge GST?

Any web designer registered for GST must add 15% GST to their prices. Most agencies quote +GST because their clients are GST-registered businesses that can claim it back. If you are not GST-registered, budget for the GST-inclusive figure, which is the quoted price multiplied by 1.15.

Why do website quotes in NZ vary so much?

Quotes vary because they cover very different amounts of work. One quote may be a template with your logo dropped in, while another includes strategy, custom design, copywriting, SEO setup, page speed work and training. Compare the number of pages, who writes the content, what SEO is included, who owns the site and what the monthly costs are before comparing the headline price.

Is it cheaper to build a website myself?

It is cheaper in cash, but not always in total cost. A DIY site takes many hours to build properly, and most owner-built sites miss the basics that bring in enquiries, such as clear calls to action, fast loading, local SEO and proper page titles. If your time is worth more than a few hundred dollars a day, a professional build often pays for itself quickly.

How much should I budget each year to run a website?

For a typical small-business website, budget for a domain name, quality hosting, an SSL certificate (often included with hosting), software or plugin licences, and maintenance. Together these usually run from a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars a year. Marketing such as SEO or Google Ads is a separate budget that depends on your goals and competition.
